Here are the steps to solving your camera trap dilemma:
- Identify your budget - how much money is available to spend per camera.
- Climate variables - will this camera need to be able to withstand a tropical rainy season?
- Infrared vs. Incandescent - infrared cameras take color daytime, monochromatic (black and white) night pictures. Will your project require color night photos?
- Detection capabilities - some cameras are slow to 'trigger' while others 'trigger' in 0.2 seconds.
Finding a Camera Trap
1. Budgets.
This is pretty self-explanatory. If your budget requires each camera to stay under $250 then you can immediately eliminate every camera over that price point.

Every camera trap on the market is classified as 'weather resistant.' From our own personal experience and more importantly, the field studies of our Research Scientist clients, there are several cameras that have performed admirably in certain situations.
For instance, the only camera trap brand on the market that can withstand the frigid conditions of Antarctica is Reconyx. Reconyx cameras are rated to go down to -20° Fahrenheit, but we have had researchers claim their cameras worked at even lower temperatures.
High humidity, wet rain forests can play havoc with an ill-equipped camera trap. As can dry, sandy deserts. Most cameras these days are fully sealed (with a rubber gasket on the inside) protecting the camera from moisture damage.
3. Infrared vs Incandescent
This is an age old debate. The risk of scaring animals with an incandescent flash, but the reward of having a color night photo. On the flip side, an infrared camera will produce only a faint red glow, but the night photos will be in black and white.
Incandescent flash camera traps are almost required for cat researchers because they must be able to identify individual animals based on their spots. An infrared camera may not be able to do this as well as an incandescent at night.
The infrared cameras will be less 'intrusive' to normal wildlife activities as they will not spook the animals when taking a picture in the black of night. Many modern infrared camera traps produce bright, clear infrared pictures. Also, if the camera is going to need to be completely 'covert' at night, you will need a No Glow Infrared Camera Trap.
4. Detection Capabilities
A camera is useless if matched with a weak detection circuit. Quick trigger speeds, fast recovery times, long detection ranges and wide detection zones are optimal. The bigger the detection area the camera traps can monitor and the faster a camera 'triggers' and 'recovers,' the more photos you will have of any given species.
